This year, instead of throwing rice, you can put it to good use by using it to fill up soft pillows that can be warmed in the microwave.
Warm Pillows
For this fun Engagement craft idea you’ll need the following items to make one pillow; a piece of 100% cotton woven or knit fabric that measures 10 ½ inches by 21 inches, a piece of 100% solid cotton woven or knit fabric for inside pillow that measures 10 ½ inches by 21 inches, roughly 4 cups of dry rice, sewing thread, and sewing needles.
Begin your Engagement Craft pillow by folding the rectangle for the inner pillow cover in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Stitch across long side and one of the short sides, leaving one short side open. It might be easier for you to begin these craft pillows for your guests on the sewing machine by sewing up the sides of the fabric pieces in advance. Then your engagement party guests can choose the pillow fabric they like fill it up and just hand stitch across the top of the pillow.
Once you’ve filled the inner pillow with rice and stitched it, you can make your outer pillow sack. Pin the right sides of the outer cover fabric together and stitch only the long sides closed. Turn right side out and fit over inner Engagement pillow filled with rice. If you like you can add a nice hem to the open side of the outer pillow case. Now you’ve completed your engagement pillow, which is just perfect for warming those cold feet.
Be sure to pick out a bunch of different fabric styles for your Engagement pillows. So guests can pick out the fabric style to suite their personalities. Be sure to tell your guests to remove their outer pillow cases before microwaving their rice pillows for warmth. It takes about two minutes to heat up in the microwave. Also it’s a good idea to place a mug of water in the microwave with the pillow, so you get a moist heat and it doesn’t dry out the contents of your pillow too much. As anything can catch fire if let in the microwave too long.
