The 2009 season for the Cincinnati Reds was fairly good – considering the Reds of seasons past – finishing with a 78-84 record. The Reds did finish 4th in the National League Central division ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros. The Reds have been hoovering around the .500 mark for the last several seasons but haven’t cracked it yet.
The Reds have a couple good players but no great good players on their roster. The Reds line up had 4 player all hitting over 20 home runs – Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Jonny Gomes and Brandon Philips. Joey Votto was 5th in the NL in batting average at .322 and 5th in slugging percentage at .567.
Starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo lead the team in wins with 15, 21st in ERA at 3.84 and 4th in innings pitched with 220.1. Branson also pitched 2 shut outs which shows he can go the distance. Other then Arroyo no other starting pitcher had more wins then losses winning more the 10 games – the next closest was Johnny Cueto at 11-11.
Big name players typically do not sign with the Reds – therefore, the Reds farm system has to build a team from the ground up. The last season the Reds made the playoffs was in 1995. The Reds finished with 96 wins in 1999 but still finished 2nd in the NL Central division.
Cincinnati Reds have a great fan base ready to support a division contender. If the Reds hope to contend any time soon spending money will have to an option to consider. The Reds have averaged 75-80 wins the last few seasons and maybe one more bat or stud starting pitcher from challenging the Cards or Cubs.
Ownership might have a laid back attitude to their approach in winning baseball and will wait for the right mix to come about.
