Men’s jewelry has come a long ways from its origins. Although more traditionally a woman’s way to decorate her body in Western culture, men have been wearing jewellery just as long, and have had as much variety in the styles and types of jewellery they have worn. Much of that has to do with the materials their jewellery was made from.
The first pieces of jewellery would have been made from stone, bone or ivory. Whittled from surrounding rocks, or from the carcass of a kill, these pieces would have been highly traditionalized, and their wearing would have displayed significance to those around them. Ivory jewellery has continued to enjoy a certain amount of popularity, but that fame has been muted by the desire to discontinue the harvest of ivory.
Wood jewellery has been a popular choice in the past as well, due to its abundance and the ease with which it can be shaped to any form. Wood is not a very permanent form of jewellery, however, as it has no resistance to water, and is prone to wear and rot.
Jewellery made from china or porcelain has been around as long as the process to produce pieces has existed. Porcelain was made to be as pure white as bone, but less porous. However, the resulting pieces are far more delicate than bone or ivory. As such, ornamental pieces are still produced today, but their fragility makes them hard to wear in many situations.
Simple metals were brought into jewellery making at the start of metallurgy. Both the need for newer, stronger weapons and the desire for more beautiful jewellery pushed the science of metal production in the past, and items of tin, copper, brass, silver and gold were worn by those of noble birth and deep pockets.
Gold has been known to be used as decoration for the body as far back as the fourth millennium BC, and is mentioned in the Bible as a popular metal for jewellery and other riches. Gold continues to be one of the most popular metals today for use in jewellery, despite there only having been approximately 160,000 tonnes of gold ever mined and extracted by people. This keeps gold’s value relatively high, maintaining its position as the jewellery of the rich and very rich alike.
Titanium is known as the “space age” metal, and in terms of use in jewellery, does not have much of a pedigree. Titanium was long used for military and scientific purposes, but only recently has it been incorporated into men’s jewelry. But since its arrival, titanium has carved out a niche for itself among men who want to adorn themselves with something less primitive than the old standards of jewellery.
