No fake vitamin K and it says it’s “Made in Canada” – and I live in Canada, so to me that’s a plus.
It looks good. All sources are named (like, “chicken fat” instead of “animal fat”). The first ingredient is a named animal protein source in meal form, which means that the chicken source is truly the first ingredient. (Meat “meals” are already dehydrated when they’re measured and put into the food. “Meats” are measured before they’re dehydrated and added, so by the time they’re dehydrated and put into the food, the quantity is actually much less than the original measure.) It doesn’t contain corn, which is difficult for dogs to digest. It contains many healthy vegetables and fruits, which is great. It contains salmon oil, a source of healthy fatty acids like Omega-3. It has no artificial colorants, preservatives or flavorings. It contains no by-products, added sweeteners or gluten meals. It has whole grains, not fragments.
It would be better if it had more named animal proteins and didn’t contain any fat (besides a form of fish oil). Is your dog allergic to other protein sources? If not, a food with more sources than just chicken in the early ingredients would be advisable. Beet pulp is a bit of a controversial ingredient, some individuals believe it’s related to bloat, so it might be better off without it. (That is not proven, however!)
Does the company disclose where the food is made? If not, the food is too sketchy to continue using.
Does that list of vitamins and minerals include a form of menadione, such as menadione sodium bisulfate? If so, ditch the food. This is a synthetic vitamin K that has been strongly linked to many side effects, including liver damage and anemia.
So, as long as the company doesn’t hide where the food is produced and as long as it doesn’t contain synthetic vitamin K, it’s fine. It isn’t the BEST, but it’s perfectly fine. There are better foods to choose from, but this is not a food of which to be ashamed. It’s a thousand times better than a bag of Iams or Eukanuba.
