While there are many different types of treatment for candida, not all of them are intended to be a long term solution. While medical treatments will generally focus on providing immediate relief, you will also need to address the issues that caused the condition to occur in the first place so you can ensure that it does not happen again.
Candida albicans is a yeast-like substance which occurs naturally, in relatively small amounts, in the gastrointestinal tract, in your mouth, and on your skin. It usually remains under control through the presence of ‘friendly’ bacteria that is naturally produced by our bodies. Sometimes, however, the friendly bacteria is not able to restrict the candida growth and the substance then turns into a fungal form that takes over the body. This will usually occur if the immune system is weakened or if other treatments (like antibiotics) have destroyed the other bacteria.
When it begins to infect your body, candida will release poisons into your blood and this can lead to some serious symptoms. These could include red, itchy rashes on the skin and a cottage cheese like excretion which may be in or around the mouth. Other symptoms can include chronic tiredness, fungus around your nails, joint pain, and bad breath.
Treatment for Candida Options
- Your doctor is likely to prescribe a topical ointment that will help relieve itching and/or tablets (to be taken orally) that work to relieve other external symptoms. Generally, these medicines will be available over-the-counter at pharmacies and should work effectively to provide short term relief. Keep in mind though, if you want to stop candida from happening again, you have to address the root causes and not just the external symptoms.
- Yeast infection is a fungus so ideally your treatment should utilize an anti-fungal diet, anti-fungal natural products, and probiotic supplements. This will help to reduce your intake of sugars, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, and yeast-based foods. This is important as the candida yeast effectively feeds on any sugar so, if you remove it from your diet, it should slow down the growth and eventually it should die off. When it feeds, the yeast works to ferment the sugar and then produces ethanol (alcohol) and other toxic chemicals like acetaldehyde. Accordingly, you should avoid sugary products as much as possible and also limit processed foods like ready-made meals, baked beans, and frozen foods.
- Just changing your diet can sometimes be enough to resolve mild cases of yeast infection but you may need some anti-fungal products for more severe cases. There are drugs available like Nizoral, Nystatin, and Diflucan. It is important to note that these are intended for short term use and are also becoming ineffectual against some specific strains of infection. This is why people are increasingly turning to natural products such as garlic, plant tannins, oregano and barberry.
- When you begin a course of anti-fungal products you should also consider taking probiotic supplements as this bacteria can replace the yeast colonies which are being destroyed. This works to then avoid a die off reaction (known as a Herxheimer reaction) where toxins from the dying yeast can actually overwhelm the body.
Natural treatment for candida is not a quick fix, but it can really help to provide a long lasting solution to the problem.
